Georgia O'Keeffe received her first major one-person museum exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1946.
The Museum of Modern Art in New York presented Georgia O'Keeffe: Retrospective Exhibition from May 14 through June 30, 1946. The exhibition recognized the breadth of her career, including paintings of flowers, New York buildings, abstract forms, and New Mexico subjects.
The show was historically significant because O'Keeffe was the first woman to receive a one-person retrospective at MoMA. By that point, she had already been exhibiting for decades, but the retrospective helped confirm her position in the central story of American modernism.
This date is sometimes confused with later retrospectives at other museums. O'Keeffe continued to receive major exhibitions throughout her long career, including international presentations and surveys organized after her move to New Mexico.
