Georgia O'Keeffe purchased her famous Abiquiu house in 1945.
The house had been abandoned and was in poor condition when O'Keeffe acquired it. She was drawn to a distinctive walled courtyard and a door in the adobe wall, which became subjects of repeated paintings. Architect Juan Hamilton later helped with restoration and practical changes to the property.
O'Keeffe did not move permanently to New Mexico until 1949, so the purchase predates her permanent relocation. The Abiquiu home eventually became one of her principal working places, alongside the Ghost Ranch area. Its architecture, courtyard, and surrounding landscape were integrated into her artistic vision.
The property is now preserved as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio, a National Historic Landmark. The date is often confused with 1949 because that was the year O'Keeffe settled permanently in New Mexico, but 1945 is the purchase year.
