Georgia O'Keeffe died in Santa Fe in 1986 at the age of 98.
O'Keeffe died on March 6, 1986, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She had been born in 1887, so her life spanned nearly a century of major changes in American art, photography, cities, and museums.
Her late years included declining eyesight and increasing physical limitations, but her artistic reputation continued to grow. She had already become an influential figure through paintings of flowers, bones, landscapes, skyscrapers, and abstract forms. Her death came several years before the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened in Santa Fe in 1997.
Some accounts emphasize Abiquiú or Ghost Ranch because of their importance to her work, but Santa Fe was the place of her death. O'Keeffe's ashes were scattered at Cerro Pedernal, a mountain she repeatedly painted and described as her private symbol.
