Georgia O'Keeffe bought her Abiquiú house in New Mexico in 1945. The property had been a neglected adobe compound, and she transformed it into a home and studio.
O'Keeffe had first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned regularly before making the Southwest her permanent base. She was drawn to its landscape, architecture, vegetation, and distinctive light, all of which became central subjects in her work.
The Abiquiú property is often confused with Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico location closely associated with O'Keeffe. Ghost Ranch was her summer home, while the Abiquiú house became her principal residence after its renovation.
The house contains a famous courtyard wall and door that O'Keeffe painted repeatedly. Today the Abiquiú home is preserved as part of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum's historic properties, while access is available through scheduled tours.
