C.S. Lewis’s BBC broadcast talks began in 1941.
During the Second World War, Lewis delivered a series of radio talks for the BBC that explained basic Christian ideas to a general audience. The first series was broadcast in 1941, followed by additional series in 1942 and 1944.
The talks were later revised and published in book form as Mere Christianity. The book was not a verbatim transcript of one broadcast, but an organized version of the material from the radio talks. Its title refers to the central beliefs shared across historic Christian traditions rather than to one particular denomination.
The dates can be confusing because the talks were broadcast over several years and the book appeared later, in 1952. The opening broadcasts therefore belong to 1941, while the collected book is associated with the postwar publication period.
