Coca-Cola first sold its drink in cans in 1955.
Cans gave Coca-Cola another package format alongside fountain service and glass bottles. The company introduced canned Coca-Cola in 1955, expanding the drink’s portability and making it easier to sell in settings where returnable bottles were less convenient.
Early canned Coca-Cola packaging differed from the modern aluminum can. Initial cans were made from steel and used a design intended to resemble the familiar Coca-Cola bottle label. Over time, improvements in materials, opening mechanisms and printing changed the appearance and usability of the package.
The 1955 date is distinct from the introduction of Coca-Cola in bottles, which began much earlier. It is also separate from the later widespread adoption of aluminum beverage cans, which transformed packaging across the soft-drink industry.
