Amazon launched its Kindle e-reader in 2007.
The first Kindle went on sale in the United States in November 2007. Amazon presented it as a dedicated electronic-reading device with wireless access to the Kindle Store, allowing users to obtain books without connecting the device to a personal computer.
The Kindle extended Amazon’s original book business into digital publishing and hardware. Its electronic-ink display was designed to resemble printed text, while the integrated store made purchasing and downloading digital books part of the device experience.
A common mix-up is using the launch date of later Kindle models. Amazon introduced several generations and versions after the first release, including touchscreen and tablet-like products. The original Kindle launch year remains 2007, when Amazon first established the Kindle brand as a major e-book platform.
