In which year did Alan Turing die?
Answer
1954
Answer
1954
Alan Turing died in 1954.
Turing died on 7 June 1954, aged 41, at his home in Wilmslow, Cheshire. His housekeeper discovered his body the following day. A post-mortem examination found cyanide poisoning, and the inquest recorded his death as suicide. The precise circumstances have remained debated, with some historians and biographers considering accidental cyanide exposure from his home experiments possible.
Turing’s death came only a few years after his prosecution for homosexual acts in 1952. He accepted oestrogen treatment, commonly described as chemical castration, instead of imprisonment. At the time, homosexual acts between men were criminalised in the United Kingdom. He had already made major contributions to wartime codebreaking, theoretical computer science and the foundations of artificial intelligence.
His remains were cremated at Woking Crematorium on 12 June 1954, and his ashes were scattered there. The year is sometimes confused with 1952, when his prosecution occurred, or 1950, when his famous paper on machine intelligence was published.
