In which Wisconsin city did Georgia O’Keeffe study at the University of Wisconsin?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O’Keeffe studied at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

O’Keeffe enrolled at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1905 and studied under the art educator Alon Bement. Her university training gave her a formal foundation in drawing and painting before she continued her education at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York.

Madison was an important early stage in her development, but O’Keeffe did not remain there throughout her training. Financial limitations and changing career plans affected the path of her education. She later worked as a commercial artist and teacher, experiences that preceded her breakthrough as an abstract artist.

The city is sometimes confused with Sun Prairie, where O’Keeffe was born, or with Chicago, where she attended the Art Institute. These were separate places and separate stages of her early life. Madison’s university campus helped begin her professional art education before her work moved in more experimental directions.
