In which village did Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead, according to John’s Gospel?

The story behind the answer

According to John’s Gospel, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead in Bethany.

John 11 identifies Bethany as the village of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, located near Jerusalem. Lazarus has died and has been in the tomb for four days when Jesus arrives. After speaking with Martha and praying, Jesus calls Lazarus out of the tomb, and Lazarus emerges alive. The episode is the climactic sign in John’s Gospel before the final events of Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion.

Bethany is not the same place as Bethsaida, Cana, or Emmaus. It is traditionally identified with a settlement on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, near Jerusalem, often associated with modern al-Eizariya. John’s account emphasizes both the personal relationship between Jesus and the family and the public consequences of the miracle: many people believe, while religious leaders begin planning more urgently against Jesus. The village therefore has both geographical and narrative importance.
