In which Vatican building is the Sistine Chapel located?

The Sistine Chapel is located in the Vatican Apostolic Palace.

The chapel forms part of the Vatican Apostolic Palace, the papal residence and administrative complex in Vatican City. It is not inside Saint Peter’s Basilica, although the two famous buildings are close together within the Vatican and are often discussed in the same visitor itinerary.

The building was constructed in the fifteenth century under Pope Sixtus IV. Its location made it useful for papal worship and ceremonies, and it later became the setting for conclaves in which cardinals elect a pope. Its artistic importance comes from both the earlier wall paintings and the later works by Michelangelo.

The Vatican Apostolic Palace has also been known as the Papal Palace and the Palace of Sixtus V. The pope’s official residence has more recently been associated with the Domus Sanctae Marthae, but that separate residence is not the location of the Sistine Chapel.
