In which US state is the coffee company Starbucks headquartered?

The story behind the answer

In which US state is the coffee company Starbucks headquartered? Starbucks is headquartered in Washington.

The company’s world headquarters is Starbucks Center, in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood. Seattle is in Washington State, in the Pacific Northwest, and remains closely connected with Starbucks’ identity and history.

Starbucks was founded in 1971 by Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker at Seattle’s Pike Place Market. It initially sold roasted coffee beans and equipment rather than operating primarily as the espresso-drink chain familiar today. Howard Schultz later helped transform the business into a large coffeehouse company.

A common mix-up is confusing Washington State with Washington, D.C. The headquarters is in Seattle, Washington State—not the U.S. capital. Oregon is nearby and also has a strong coffee culture, but it is not Starbucks’ home state.
