Ghost Ranch, a major subject of Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings, is in New Mexico.
The ranch lies near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico, amid dramatic cliffs, mesas, and desert formations. O'Keeffe first visited the area in the 1930s and found its landscape especially important to her work.
She painted nearby geological forms repeatedly, including the cliffs around Ghost Ranch. The landscape's strong colors, exposed rock, and changing light offered a very different visual environment from the New York subjects she had painted earlier in her career.
Ghost Ranch is often linked with O'Keeffe's home at Abiquiú, but they are separate places. She maintained a house at Ghost Ranch for a period and later owned and restored a historic house in the village of Abiquiú. Both locations are in New Mexico and are central to understanding her long artistic relationship with the state.
