Ghost Ranch, a major inspiration for Georgia O'Keeffe, is in New Mexico.
The ranch lies near Abiquiu in northern New Mexico, amid dramatic cliffs, mesas, and desert colors. O'Keeffe first visited the area in 1934 and returned repeatedly, eventually maintaining a home in nearby Abiquiu.
The landscape became central to her mature work. She painted cliffs, bones, roads, trees, and broad views of the high desert, often reducing them to bold shapes and carefully balanced areas of color. Her paintings made the region internationally recognizable as part of her artistic world.
Ghost Ranch is not the same place as O'Keeffe's Abiquiu house. The ranch was an important source of subjects, while the Abiquiu property became her principal New Mexico home. Both locations are now closely connected with her legacy.
