In which U.S. state did Georgia O’Keeffe spend summers painting at Ghost Ranch?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O’Keeffe spent summers painting at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico.

Ghost Ranch is a retreat and educational center near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico. O’Keeffe began visiting the area in 1934 and returned repeatedly, finding subjects in its cliffs, mesas, bones, trees, and broad desert views.

The landscape’s distinctive colors and geological forms became central to her work. Paintings associated with the area include views of the Pedernal, a mountain that O’Keeffe famously described as her private mountain because she painted it so often.

Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú are close but not identical locations. O’Keeffe maintained homes and studios connected with both places, and both contributed to the New Mexico imagery for which she became especially famous.
