In which U.S. state did Georgia O’Keeffe spend her later years and die?
Answer
New Mexico
Answer
New Mexico
Georgia O’Keeffe spent her later years and died in New Mexico.
She first traveled to New Mexico in 1929 and developed a lasting attachment to its landscapes, architecture, and Indigenous and Hispanic cultural settings. After Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946, O’Keeffe moved permanently from New York to New Mexico in 1949.
She lived first at Ghost Ranch and later made Abiquiu her main home. The state remained central to her work for the rest of her career, supplying subjects such as desert bones, adobe structures, mountains, and flowers. Her New Mexico paintings are among the works most associated with her public identity.
O’Keeffe died on March 6, 1986, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at age 98. New Mexico is therefore both the location of her most important late-life artistic base and the state where she died, rather than merely a place she visited for painting trips.
