In which U.S. state did Georgia O'Keeffe make most of her late-career home and studio life?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe made most of her late-career home and studio life in New Mexico.

She first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned regularly for years. The state's desert landscapes, adobe buildings, mountains, bones, and skies became defining subjects in her mature work.

O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949, three years after Alfred Stieglitz died. She lived and worked in Abiquiu and spent time at Ghost Ranch, continuing to paint and draw into old age.

New York remained important to her early career, and Texas shaped her years as a teacher. However, New Mexico is the state most closely identified with her later life and artistic imagery.
