Georgia O'Keeffe made many paintings of Ghost Ranch in New Mexico.
Ghost Ranch is a dramatic landscape near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico, known for multicolored cliffs, mesas, and broad desert skies. O'Keeffe first visited the area in 1934 and returned repeatedly, eventually acquiring a house nearby. The landscape became one of the central subjects of her mature work.
Her New Mexico paintings include isolated hills, bones, flowers, doors, and architectural fragments. Rather than making conventional topographical records, she often cropped or simplified forms so that a cliff or bone became an almost abstract design. O'Keeffe had previously painted New York skyscrapers and Lake George scenes, but New Mexico gave her a lasting visual language and a place where she could work independently.
