In which U.S. state did Georgia O'Keeffe make many of her most famous late landscapes?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe made many of her most famous late landscapes in New Mexico.

O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned frequently before moving there permanently in 1949. She was captivated by the state's stark geography: desert surfaces, cliffs, mountains, adobe buildings, animal bones, and intense light. These subjects became central to her mature work.

She maintained homes at Ghost Ranch and in Abiquiú. The surrounding landscape supplied recurring motifs, including the Pedernal mountain and the structures of the nearby Hispanic and Indigenous communities. O'Keeffe transformed these observed forms into simplified compositions rather than treating them as ordinary documentary views.

Her New Mexico paintings followed an earlier New York period focused on flowers, skyscrapers, and abstraction. A common mistake is to assume she was born or trained in New Mexico; her birth was in Wisconsin, and her formal studies took place in Chicago and New York. New Mexico became her chosen later-life home and artistic environment.
