Georgia O'Keeffe made Ghost Ranch in New Mexico a major home and source of inspiration. She first visited the area in 1929 and returned repeatedly to paint its cliffs, mesas, skies, and distinctive bones.
Ghost Ranch lies near Abiquiu in northern New Mexico. Its dramatic formations include the multicolored cliffs of the Piedra Lumbre basin, a landscape that O'Keeffe described as one of the most beautiful places she had ever seen.
O'Keeffe divided her time between Ghost Ranch and a house in Abiquiu. Although she painted many subjects there, the location was not simply a scenic backdrop: it became a central part of her artistic identity. Ghost Ranch is now associated with both her work and northern New Mexico's cultural history.
