In which U.S. state did Georgia O'Keeffe live and work from 1949 onward?
Answer
New Mexico
Answer
New Mexico
Georgia O'Keeffe lived and worked in New Mexico from 1949 onward.
O'Keeffe began visiting New Mexico in 1929 and spent increasing amounts of time there after Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946. In 1949 she moved permanently to the state, first living at Ghost Ranch and later maintaining a home in Abiquiú. The region supplied the bones, cliffs, adobe buildings, roads, and broad skies that became recurring subjects.
Her New Mexico paintings were not simple topographical records. O'Keeffe transformed familiar forms through close cropping, simplified shapes, unusual scale, and intense color. Works showing the Pedernal, a distinctive flat-topped mountain, demonstrate how a local landmark became a repeated personal symbol.
New Mexico is sometimes confused with Arizona because both states are associated with desert art and the American Southwest. O'Keeffe’s strongest geographic association, however, is with northern New Mexico, especially Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú.
