In which U.S. city was the Snowshoe cat breed developed during the 1960s?

The story behind the answer

The Snowshoe cat breed was developed in Philadelphia during the 1960s.

The breed began when Philadelphia breeder Dorothy Hinds-Daugherty found three Siamese kittens with unusual white markings on their feet. She worked to develop those markings into a consistent breed type, combining Siamese features with cats that contributed the desired white pattern.

Snowshoe cats are named for their white paws, which resemble small snowshoes. Their traditional appearance also includes a colorpoint pattern, a white inverted-V marking on the face, and a medium-sized, muscular body. Kittens are born pale and develop darker points as they mature.

The breed is sometimes confused with other colorpoint cats, but its white feet and facial markings are central to the Snowshoe identity. Its name refers to its markings, not to a place of origin or a wild-cat connection.
