In which two years did Rod Laver complete the calendar-year Grand Slam?

The story behind the answer

Rod Laver completed the calendar-year Grand Slam in 1962 and 1969. In each of those seasons, the Australian won the Australian, French, Wimbledon and U.S. singles championships in the same calendar year.

His first Grand Slam came in 1962 while he was still an amateur. The achievement made him the first man since Don Budge in 1938 to sweep all four major tournaments in one season. Laver’s victory in the French Championships was especially demanding because he had to win several long matches on clay, including a five-set final against Roy Emerson.

Laver repeated the feat in 1969, after the Open Era had begun and professional players were eligible for the major championships. That second sweep remains unique in men’s singles. A common mix-up is confusing a calendar-year Grand Slam with a career Grand Slam, which means winning each major at least once over a player’s career rather than all four in one season.
