The series is set primarily in the Slough branch of the fictional paper merchant Wernham Hogg. Slough is a real town in Berkshire, west of London, and its industrial and commercial character suits the programme’s deliberately ordinary workplace setting.
The branch is managed by David Brent, played by Ricky Gervais. Much of the comedy comes from the contrast between Brent’s grand view of himself and the unglamorous reality of office life around him. The documentary crew observes staff dealing with sales targets, redundancies, romances and workplace rivalries.
London, Birmingham and Reading are real UK cities or towns that may sound plausible as locations, but they are not the branch location in the series. Swindon is the most relevant neighbouring mix-up: Wernham Hogg also has a Swindon branch, whose employees and management become important during the story. The programme’s main office, however, remains the Slough branch.
