In which town did Mendel attend the Philosophical Institute?
Answer
Olomouc
Answer
Olomouc
Mendel attended the Philosophical Institute in Olomouc, a city now in the Czech Republic. From 1840 to 1843, he studied practical and theoretical philosophy as well as physics there before entering the Augustinian monastery in Brno.
At the time, Olomouc was known by its German name, Olmütz, because Mendel lived in the Austrian Empire’s multilingual Moravia region. His studies gave him important preparation in mathematics and the physical sciences, subjects that later shaped his unusually quantitative approach to plant hybridization.
Mendel’s education was interrupted by financial hardship and illness. His family could not comfortably support his continued studies, and his sister Theresia reportedly gave up part of her inheritance to help him. He eventually joined the monastery at Brno in 1843, where he took the religious name Gregor and gained access to an environment supportive of natural-history research.
Olomouc is often confused with Brno because Brno was the location of Mendel’s monastery, garden, and famous experiments. Vienna was also important later, where Mendel studied at the University of Vienna, but it was not the town of his Philosophical Institute education.
