In which town did J.R.R. Tolkien grow up after returning to England?
Answer
Birmingham
Answer
Birmingham
J.R.R. Tolkien grew up mainly in Birmingham after returning to England.
Tolkien’s family moved to England from South Africa after his father died in 1896. His mother, Mabel, settled with Tolkien and his younger brother Hilary near Birmingham, where the boys experienced both suburban and rural surroundings. Tolkien later drew on the landscapes around Birmingham when imagining parts of Middle-earth.
Important locations in his childhood included Sarehole Mill and Moseley Bog. The rural setting around Sarehole especially influenced his memories of trees, water, and traditional English countryside. The contrast between industrial Birmingham and nearby green spaces helped shape the atmosphere of some of his later fiction.
Tolkien did not grow up in Oxford, although Oxford became central to his adult life as a student and academic. His early schooling also took place in Birmingham before he attended King Edward’s School, where he studied languages and developed friendships with other literary-minded pupils.
