In which town did Jesus grow up, according to the Gospels?
Answer
Nazareth
Answer
Nazareth
According to the Gospels, Jesus grew up in Nazareth.
Matthew and Luke associate Jesus’ childhood with Nazareth after describing his birth and early family history. Luke says the family returned there, and Matthew presents Nazareth as the place where Jesus was raised. For this reason, the New Testament frequently identifies him as “Jesus of Nazareth.”
Nazareth was a small settlement in Galilee, in the northern part of the land ruled by Herod Antipas during Jesus’ lifetime. It was distinct from Bethlehem, the town associated with Jesus’ birth in Matthew and Luke. Capernaum, by contrast, became an important base for Jesus’ adult ministry near the Sea of Galilee. The Gospels also preserve the expression “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” in John, reflecting the town’s relatively obscure reputation. Nazareth remains central to Christian geography because it links Jesus’ family life, working years, and public identity.
