The World Trade Organization is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
The WTO operates from the Centre William Rappard, a historic building near Lake Geneva. The organization moved into the building in 1995, when it began operating as the successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade system.
Geneva has long been an important center for international diplomacy. The city also hosts the United Nations Office at Geneva, the International Labour Organization, and other international bodies, making it a practical location for trade negotiations and dispute work.
A common mix-up is to confuse the WTO headquarters with the United Nations headquarters in New York. The WTO is an independent international organization, although it cooperates with the United Nations and several UN agencies.
