In which Surrey town did Lewis Carroll die?
Answer
Guildford
Answer
Guildford
Lewis Carroll died in the Surrey town of Guildford.
Carroll—whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson—spent most of his adult life at Christ Church, Oxford, but he died in Guildford on 14 January 1898. He was staying at his sisters’ home, The Chestnuts, when he succumbed to pneumonia following influenza.
Guildford is the county town of Surrey, southwest of central London. Carroll’s connection with the town was personal rather than primarily academic: members of his family lived there, and it became the setting for his final days. His funeral was held at St Mary’s Church, a nearby historic church in the town.
The answer is sometimes confused with Oxford because Carroll’s professional life was so closely tied to Christ Church. Oxford was where he studied, taught mathematics, worked as a scholar, and lived for decades. It was not, however, the place where he died. London and Cambridge likewise played no equivalent role in the circumstances of his death.
