In which sport did Oakley begin its product line?
Answer
Motocross
Answer
Motocross
Oakley began its product line in motocross, first selling motorcycle-related products at motocross events. Its earliest signature product was the Oakley Grip, a redesigned motorcycle grip developed by founder Jim Jannard.
Jannard started Oakley in 1975 and sold products from the back of his car. The grip used a proprietary material later known as Unobtainium, along with an ergonomic design and an octopus-inspired tread pattern intended to improve traction. These details helped establish Oakley’s performance-driven approach.
The company expanded from grips into motocross goggles in 1980. That step was important because it moved Oakley directly into protective eyewear and laid the foundation for later sunglasses. Oakley’s first sunglasses, the Factory Pilot Eyeshades, followed in 1984.
Cycling later became a major part of Oakley’s identity, and the brand also developed products for skiing, snowboarding, BMX, and other sports. Those later associations can obscure the fact that motocross was the starting point for Oakley’s original product line.
