In which South Dakota town was Wild Bill Hickok killed in 1876?

The story behind the answer

Wild Bill Hickok was killed in Deadwood, South Dakota, in 1876.

Hickok, whose name was James Butler Hickok, was shot on August 2, 1876, while playing poker in a Deadwood saloon. Jack McCall killed him from behind, reportedly because McCall blamed Hickok for an earlier defeat. McCall was later captured, tried, and hanged after a second trial established that the killing had occurred in an organized community rather than in a lawless jurisdiction.

Hickok was holding a poker hand of two pairs, aces and eights, when he died. This combination became known as the “dead man’s hand,” although accounts differ about exactly which cards were visible and whether the story was recorded immediately.

Deadwood was a gold-rush settlement in the Black Hills. It later became a National Historic Landmark and remains closely associated with Hickok, Calamity Jane, and the mythology of the frontier town.
