In which South African city was Elon Musk born?

The story behind the answer

Elon Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, on June 28, 1971.

Pretoria, officially known as Tshwane in much modern government usage, is one of South Africa’s three capital cities and serves as the country’s administrative capital. Musk spent part of his childhood in South Africa before moving to Canada at age 17.

Musk’s birthplace is sometimes confused with Johannesburg because both cities are in Gauteng province and are closely associated with South Africa’s economic and political history. Johannesburg is the country’s largest city, while Pretoria is the city specifically identified in biographies of Musk as his birthplace.

After leaving South Africa, Musk studied briefly at Queen’s University in Ontario before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. His later business career included roles at Zip2, PayPal, SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, and other companies.
