In which season do leaves fall from trees?

The story behind the answer

In which season do leaves fall from trees? Leaves fall from many trees in autumn, also called fall.

Deciduous trees lose their leaves as the days become shorter and temperatures usually drop. Reduced sunlight causes the tree to stop producing as much chlorophyll, the green pigment used in photosynthesis. As chlorophyll fades, yellow, orange, and red pigments become more visible before the leaves turn brown and drop.

The process helps trees conserve water and energy during winter, when cold soil and shorter days make photosynthesis less productive. A special layer of cells forms at the base of each leaf stem, eventually allowing the wind or the tree’s own weight to detach the leaf.

Not every tree loses its leaves in autumn. Evergreen trees such as pine, fir, and holly usually retain their foliage, although they gradually replace older leaves or needles. The timing also varies by region: autumn leaf fall often occurs around September to November in the Northern Hemisphere and around March to May in the Southern Hemisphere.
