LeBron James won his first NBA Most Valuable Player award in the 2008–09 season. He received the honor after leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a franchise-record 66–16 regular-season record.
At age 24, James averaged 28.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. He also finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting and earned a place on the All-Defensive First Team. His combination of scoring, playmaking, rebounding, and defense made him the central reason Cleveland finished with the league’s best record.
The award was historic for the Cavaliers: James became the first player in franchise history to win the regular-season MVP. He followed it with another MVP in 2009–10, making him a back-to-back winner. That second award is a frequent source of confusion when identifying his first.
James’s 2008–09 Cavaliers reached the Eastern Conference Finals but lost to the Orlando Magic in six games. The MVP award therefore recognized his regular-season dominance, not a championship result.
