LeBron James led the NBA in assists during the 2019–20 season. He averaged 10.2 assists per game for the Los Angeles Lakers, the first time in his career that he finished as the league’s assists leader.

The achievement reflected a major change in James’s role. At age 35, he increasingly operated as the Lakers’ primary ball-handler and playmaker rather than mainly as a forward finishing plays. He appeared in 67 regular-season games and helped Los Angeles finish with the Western Conference’s best record.

A common mix-up is confusing the regular season with the playoffs, or confusing assists per game with total assists. The 2019–20 campaign was also the season in which James won his fourth championship and fourth Finals MVP, after the Lakers defeated the Miami Heat in the NBA bubble.
