In which seaside town is Fawlty Towers located?

The story behind the answer

Fawlty Towers is located in the seaside town of Torquay, in Devon, England.

The sitcom is set in a fictional hotel run by Basil Fawlty, his wife Sybil, and their small, frequently overwhelmed staff. Torquay gives the show a distinctly English resort-town setting, with its hotels, holidaymakers, and expectations of traditional seaside hospitality.

The location was inspired by a real hotel in Torquay: the Gleneagles Hotel, where John Cleese and other Monty Python members stayed in 1970. The hotel's eccentric co-owner, Donald Sinclair, helped inspire Basil Fawlty's hostile and unpredictable manner.

A common mix-up is assuming the programme was filmed in Torquay. Although the story takes place there, the exterior hotel scenes were filmed at Wooburn Grange Country Club in Buckinghamshire. The fictional hotel itself is never presented as a real Torquay landmark.
