Much Ado About Nothing
In which play does the character Dogberry appear? Dogberry appears in William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.
Dogberry is the chief constable of Messina’s night watch, a well-meaning but comically incompetent local officer. He is especially famous for malapropisms: using impressive-sounding words incorrectly while trying to appear learned. His partner is Verges, and together they supervise a group of equally inept watchmen.
Dogberry’s watch accidentally uncovers Don John’s plot against Hero. The watchmen overhear Borachio and Conrade discussing the scheme, arrest them, and bring them before Leonato. Although Dogberry’s confused language delays understanding, the arrests ultimately expose the truth and help restore order.
The character was created for comic actor William Kempe. The name “Dogberry” referred to the fruit of the common dogwood, which was regarded as inferior to more desirable berries. A common mix-up is confusing Dogberry with another Shakespearean comic figure, such as Sir John Falstaff; Dogberry belongs specifically to the Messina plot of Much Ado About Nothing.
