Independence Hall in Philadelphia hosted the debates and adoption of both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, making it central to America250 history.
The building was completed in 1733 as the Pennsylvania State House. The Second Continental Congress met there during the Revolutionary War, and Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in its Assembly Room on July 4, 1776.
A decade later, the Constitutional Convention met in the same building from May 25 to September 17, 1787. Delegates debated the structure of the new federal government and signed the Constitution there on September 17.
The building was not originally called Independence Hall; that name became common later. Its earlier name, Pennsylvania State House, explains why historical accounts sometimes use both names. Independence Hall was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
