Congress approved the Declaration of Independence celebrated by America250 in Independence Hall.
The building was originally the Pennsylvania State House and stood in Philadelphia, where the Second Continental Congress met. On July 4, 1776, delegates unanimously approved the Declaration in its Assembly Room. The building later became known as Independence Hall.
Independence Hall was also associated with other major events in early United States history. The Continental Congress met there, George Washington was appointed commander of the Continental Army in 1775, and the Constitutional Convention met there in 1787.
A common confusion is that the Declaration was signed by all delegates on July 4 in a single dramatic moment. The document was adopted on that date, while most signatures on the engrossed parchment were added on August 2, 1776, with some later additions.
