In which Norwegian city is the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony traditionally held?

The story behind the answer

The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is traditionally held in Oslo, Norway.

Unlike the other Nobel Prize ceremonies, which take place in Stockholm, Sweden, the Peace Prize is presented in Norway. This arrangement follows Alfred Nobel’s wishes in his 1895 will, which assigned the Norwegian Storting’s Nobel Committee responsibility for selecting the Peace Prize laureate.

The first Nobel Peace Prize ceremony took place in Oslo in 1901. The award ceremony is now held on 10 December, the anniversary of Nobel’s death, usually at Oslo City Hall. The laureate receives a medal, diploma, and monetary award.

A common mix-up is assuming that all Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm. The Nobel Peace Prize is the notable exception; the Nobel Prize ceremony for literature, physics, chemistry, and physiology or medicine takes place in Stockholm. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announces the Peace Prize winner in October before the December ceremony.
