In which New York City borough is most of Friends set?

The story behind the answer

Most of Friends is set in Manhattan, one of New York City’s five boroughs.

The series follows six friends living and working in Manhattan, with Monica and Rachel’s apartment, Chandler and Joey’s apartment, and Central Perk forming the central locations. These settings create the show’s compact social world, where the characters can regularly encounter one another between work, dating, and family events.

Friends was filmed primarily at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, rather than on location in Manhattan. That distinction sometimes causes confusion: the story’s setting is New York City, while the production itself was based in California. Establishing shots and set design helped establish the Manhattan identity.

The show also used other New York locations in its story, including Ross’s workplace and various restaurants, hotels, and apartments. Nevertheless, Manhattan is the consistent home base for the main ensemble and the setting most closely associated with the series.
