In which New Mexico village is Georgia O'Keeffe’s former home and studio?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe’s former home and studio is in Abiquiu, New Mexico.

O'Keeffe acquired the abandoned adobe house in Abiquiu in 1945 and spent years renovating it. She began living there regularly in 1949, after Alfred Stieglitz’s death, and the house became one of her principal homes for the rest of her life. Its walls, courtyard, door, and surrounding landscape appear in several works.

The property is especially associated with a black door set in a sunlit adobe wall. O'Keeffe painted and photographed the door repeatedly, treating the architectural detail as an abstract composition rather than merely part of a building. The house also offered views toward the Pedernal mountain, another recurring subject.

Abiquiu is distinct from Santa Fe, where the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened in 1997. The home and studio are preserved as a National Historic Landmark and are managed for public visits through the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
