Georgia O’Keeffe restored a historic home in Abiquiú, New Mexico.
O’Keeffe discovered the abandoned house in Abiquiú in the 1930s and later acquired it in 1945. She spent years restoring the property, which had a courtyard, thick adobe walls, and a distinctive door opening onto a courtyard wall. The house became both a residence and a studio.
She moved into the Abiquiú home in 1949, after Alfred Stieglitz’s death, while also maintaining a residence at Ghost Ranch. The property’s architecture and surrounding landscape entered her work, especially the courtyard wall and door that she painted repeatedly.
Abiquiú is distinct from Santa Fe, the larger city where the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum opened in 1997. It is also distinct from Ghost Ranch, which lies nearby and was another important O’Keeffe location. The Abiquiú house remained associated with her later working life and is now preserved as a historic site managed by the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum.
