Georgia O'Keeffe purchased and restored a historic adobe house in Abiquiú, New Mexico.
O'Keeffe had visited New Mexico for years before acquiring the Abiquiú property in 1945. The house had been abandoned and required extensive work, but its walls, courtyard, and views suited the way she wanted to live and work. She later made it her principal home and studio.
The property became a recurring presence in her art. A famous black door opening onto a courtyard appeared in several paintings, including works based on the house's architectural details. O'Keeffe treated the building as both a practical residence and a subject for sustained observation.
Abiquiú is often confused with Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe also lived and painted. Ghost Ranch is a larger landscape area north of Abiquiú; the restored adobe house is in the village itself. The property is now preserved as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio.
