Georgia O'Keeffe owned the adobe house associated with her later life in Abiquiú, New Mexico.
She first saw the abandoned adobe compound in Abiquiú in the 1930s and acquired it in 1945. The property became her winter home and studio after she moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949.
The house contains the courtyard, black door, and surrounding adobe architecture that O'Keeffe repeatedly photographed and painted. Its intimate architectural details became as important to her artistic vision as the region's broad desert landscapes.
The Abiquiú home is distinct from Ghost Ranch, where she also lived and worked during earlier periods. The property is preserved as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio and is a National Historic Landmark.
