Georgia O'Keeffe owned a historic adobe home in Abiquiú.
O'Keeffe acquired and restored a largely ruined adobe house in Abiquiú, New Mexico, beginning in the 1940s. The property became her home and studio and included architectural details that later appeared in her art, especially a courtyard wall and a door that she framed in repeated compositions.
The house gave O'Keeffe a stable base near the landscapes she painted. Its renovation was gradual, and she worked with local builders to make the historic structure livable while retaining its traditional adobe character. The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio is now preserved as a historic site.
Abiquiú is distinct from Santa Fe, where O'Keeffe died, and from Ghost Ranch, where she also maintained a residence. These locations are all in northern New Mexico, which accounts for many location mix-ups in accounts of her life.
