Georgia O'Keeffe made her permanent New Mexico home in Abiquiu in 1949.
O'Keeffe had visited New Mexico regularly since 1929, but after Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946, she moved there permanently. She lived first at Ghost Ranch and later restored and occupied a historic house in Abiquiu.
The Abiquiu house and its walled garden became important subjects and settings in her later life. Its doorway, walls, and surrounding landscape appear repeatedly in her paintings and photographs.
Abiquiu is not the same as Santa Fe, although Santa Fe was an important regional cultural center and is home to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. O'Keeffe's house in Abiquiu is preserved by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and is open through scheduled tours.
