Georgia O'Keeffe maintained a home in Abiquiú, New Mexico, from 1945.
The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio is a historic adobe property in Abiquiú, a village north of Santa Fe. O'Keeffe acquired the house in 1945 and renovated it with the help of architect Juan Hamilton. The property includes the famous black door opening onto a courtyard wall, a motif she painted repeatedly.
Abiquiú became one of O'Keeffe's principal bases after she moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949. She also spent time at Ghost Ranch, about twelve miles north, whose cliffs and badlands supplied many subjects for her paintings.
Abiquiú is often confused with Santa Fe because Santa Fe is the nearest major cultural center and the location of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. The home itself is in Abiquiú, while O'Keeffe died in Santa Fe in 1986.
