Georgia O'Keeffe established a permanent home and studio in Abiquiú, New Mexico.
O'Keeffe acquired and restored a house in Abiquiú during the 1940s, and the property became her principal home and studio. The house is especially known for its courtyard wall and door, which appear in several of her paintings.
Abiquiú is distinct from Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe also lived and worked for periods. Ghost Ranch supplied expansive desert views and cliffs, while the Abiquiú house offered an enclosed architectural subject that she repeatedly studied from different viewpoints.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation now helps preserve the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio. The site illustrates how closely her art was tied to specific places and ordinary structures. A door, wall, or set of adobe forms could become a carefully simplified composition rather than just a background detail.
