Georgia O'Keeffe bought a house in Abiquiú, New Mexico, in 1945.
The property was a historic adobe house with a distinctive courtyard wall and door. O'Keeffe had first noticed the door during walks and later made it a recurring subject in paintings, including Black Door with Red. She purchased the house in 1945 and renovated it with the help of architect Juan Hamilton, making it a year-round home and studio.
Her Abiquiú house differed from her Ghost Ranch residence. Ghost Ranch supplied the broad desert views and rugged geological forms that appeared in many paintings, while Abiquiú offered enclosed architectural spaces and a more settled studio environment. The home is now preserved by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and is open to visitors during scheduled tours.
